How To Play

daily fantasy sports

Getting started is easy – at PlayON you can pick new fantasy teams for a variety of sports, each and every day. Your results don’t carry over from week to week, so there is no need to worry about falling behind.
With Daily Fantasy Sports, you can also play whenever suits you best – if you miss a game don’t worry, there’s a new game waiting for you the following day.

Picking Teams

To get started, choose Pick a Team from the main menu. Select which sport, competition and timeframe you want to play.

Now you are ready to pick your team. With PlayON, you have a virtual budget of 100m $ or £ to spend on picking your team. You cannot exceed this budget.

Select your team’s players from any of the real life players competing in that day’s matches. For example in a Premier League contest on a Saturday, you can choose your team from any of the players playing in that day’s fixtures, so long as their total value is under $100m.

Once you’re happy with your team, click ‘Save’ and you’re ready to enter games!

Don’t worry if you aren’t fully happy with your team – you can come back later and change it. You can pick and re-save as many teams as you like, any time you like right up to the start of the match.

Entering Games

Once you have picked a team, you can then enter it into games. You can view all games on offer by clicking Games Lobby from your Dashboard or the menu.

Choose between big cash prizes in the multiplayer games, the glory and bragging rights of the one-on-one games, or anything in between. The table can be filtered by sport, competition, game type, and timeframe by using the filters above the table, so it’s easy to find whatever game you are looking for.

Entering Games

You can continue to pick teams and enter games right up to a minute before the scheduled start of the match. You can also view your teams and games in the Saved Teams and Entered Games pages, which you can access from the menu or from your Dashboard.

Point scoring

Your team scores points based on the real-world performance of your players as per the table below:

For example, in a cricket game, If Chris Gayle hits a six, he will be awarded 80 points (10 points for each run, plus a 20 point bonus). A breakdown of the scoring system for each sport we offer can be found by clicking on the Scoring Matrix link in the footer.

Live Games

With your teams successfully entered into games, it’s now time for the really exciting part! Cheer every event as you watch your players rack up points in real-time. A running total and breakdown of points for each team can be viewed in the My Live Games area of the site. You can also see how close you are to landing first place by keeping track of the leaderboard for each game.

Once a game has concluded and winnings have been paid out, all information regarding your teams and games for that match can be viewed in the My Results section of the site – which can be accessed via the Dashboard and menu.

Managing Teams

Actively managing your teams is a big part of PlayON, so it’s important to know when and where you can do this.

(i) Viewing and Editing Your saved teams can be viewed in the Saved Teams section, which can be accessed via the Dashboard or main menu. You can edit or rename your saved teams at any stage before the start of a match. But remember – when you save changes to a team, those changes will apply in all of the games that you have entered.

Managing Teams

(ii) Importing When picking a new team, it’s also possible to import a saved team to use as a basis for your new one. To do this, click the “Import” dropdown in the Pick a Team area and select the saved team you would like to import. Now make any changes, and save. When you save changes to the new lineup it won’t affect games that you have already entered with the original one.

Games types

At PlayON we aim to cater for every type of fantasy sports player, regardless of skill level or experience. That’s why we offer a broad variety of games that differ by number of entrants, payout structure, cost of entry, and currency. You can search for games according to these criteria by using the filters in the Enter Games lobby.

(i) Number of Entrants One way that games differ is the number of entrants that are allowed to join the game. For example: we offer large multiplayer games like the £500 Premier League games, for those who want the chance to earn some money from their fantasy teams. Or, if it’s bragging rights that you’re after, we offer one-on-one games where you can take on your friends or other PlayON members.

(ii) Payout Structures Payout structures range from a winner-takes-all format to a variety of other methods of distributing the prize pot. Here is a breakdown of our progressive payout structure, which is used for some of our larger games:

Pos. 3-9 10-19 20-29 30-49 50-99 100-249 250-499 500+
1ST 50% 40% 37% 31% 28% 25% 22.5% 20%
2ND 30% 30% 26.7% 21.5% 20% 17.5% 15% 14%
3RD 20% 20% 17.8% 16.5% 14% 12% 10% 10%
4TH 10% 10.4% 12% 10% 8% 7.5% 8%
5TH 8.1% 9% 8% 7% 6.5% 6%
6TH 6% 6% 6% 5% 4.5%
7TH 3.5% 5% 5% 4% 3%
8TH 4% 4% 3% 2.5%
9TH 3% 3% 2.5% 2.2%
10TH 2% 2.5% 2% 1.8%
11th-20th 1% 1.2% 1.2%
21st-30th 1.0% 1.0%
31st-40th 0.6%
Final payout will be determined based on the final number of entrants once the game goes live

A full list and explanation of the different payout structures can be found by following the Payout Structures link in the footer.

(iii) Cost of Entry If you’d like to enter games for real money, you can check out the Entry Fee and Prize Pot on the Enter Games table, and choose the game you’d like to enter. The majority of each entry fee is paid into the prize pot, with PlayON taking a small percentage as commission. A full breakdown of our commission structure can be found by clicking on the link in the footer. But don’t worry, we also offer plenty of free-entry games (many of which offer real cash prizes) if you just want to practice or play for fun.

(iv) Currency PlayON offers games in three different currencies: Sterling (£), Euros (€), and Dollars ($). To enter a game in a particular currency, you need to have a balance in that currency. So for example, if you’d like to enter a cricket game which is listed in dollars, you need to have a sufficient dollar balance. Depositing is 100% secure and can can be done by credit card, or using secure online payment Skrill. You can easily deposit or withdraw funds at any time by accessing the Account section.

Creating games

The Create Games area can be accessed through the Dashboard or main menu. This feature allows you to choose the type of game (i.e. multiplayer or one-on-one), the entry fee, the payout structure, the number of entrants, and whether it is open to the public or invite only.

The “Challenge a Friend” function makes it possible to challenge anyone on the site to a one-on-one game, where you can compete for the all important bragging rights.

Team news

It’s important to keep up to date with team news. Who’s injured? Who’s on form? Will the conditions affect team selection? Remember, there are no substitutes in PlayON, so part of the skill is predicting who will play each week. PlayON posts all the latest news, stats and insights, so be sure to check the PlayON blog - Daily Fantasy Focus - to keep up to date.

Stand out from the crowd

Proven quality is very important in any fantasy sports game. However, it’s worth taking a calculated risk and straying from the pack with your selections sometimes – it could be the difference between winning that big pot and finishing mid-table. You can see the percentage of teams that contain any given player next to the list of names in the Pick a Team area of the site. You can use your knowledge of the game to find players who you believe to be a good bargain – these finds could give your team the edge.

Pick the player, not the team

PlayON scoring systems are quite comprehensive. We like to reward good play regardless of what a player’s role is. For example, in our Daily Fantasy T20 Cricket game we score on dot balls, wides, no balls, economy rate, individual runs, and strike rate. All of these scoring events add up. So if a player performs really well then our scoring system will pick it up, even if his team are not victorious in the end.

Analyse the match-ups

It’s important to analyse the match-ups at both the fixture and individual level. For example, in last year’s CPL, Lendl Simmons, a batsman for the Guyana Amazon Warriors, scored the most runs of any player (446); on the other hand, the St. Lucia Zouks had the worst net run rate (-0.79) of any of the five returning teams this year. So, if the Warriors were playing the Zouks, you could reasonably expect Simmons to score a lot of runs.

What’s required?

On the other hand, if the game is a winner-takes-all with a lot of entrants, you might want to take a few risks on some differentials and players that can really score high. We hope you’ve enjoyed this introduction to some of the strategic aspects of the game. Feel free to explore the blog further, where you’ll find plenty more useful hints, tips and insights.
